4th October - Winkfield Saracens 1-0 Royal Oak(Brk) FC - B&B Cup - Match Report

Goal: Brown

A first taste of European cup competition for Winkfield Saracens ended with a battling 1-0 win against the Royal Oak.

Slight changes were made from the last match and it was good to see Simon and Darryl watching from the sidelines as they continue their rehabilitation programs. Club owner Pat Cahill was not present at the game and there have been rumours in the stands of a couple of new signings to bolster the already impressive squad.

Along with the transfer gossip was talk of new a kit sponsor, Tampax. Potential pictures of the new kit have been released on the internet (right) and full-back Andy Sharp had a few words to say about the deal, "Yes, I have heard of Tampax before. They will be great for the team and the kit will smell really nice from now on".

Onto the action... Saracens always looked in control from the first whistle. Whitty, a known diver, muscled his way into the box early on and had a legitimate, for once, claim for a penalty waved away by the officials.

The pressure continued on the Oak goal with Phipps' long throws from the left working openings. However it was combination play on the right that made the only goal of the match. Holden and Sharp combined to find Whitty who turned provider lashing the ball across the box. Brown had not been tracked from midfield and headed in off of the far post. 1-0.

The home defence looked really solid for the 90 minutes, Enright and Davis winning everything in the air and there was only one testing save for Bennison. The keeper used his quick reflexes to palm a headed effort from Oak's No. 10 onto the crossbar from a corner.

Holden was replaced midway through the second half by Jon Callaway to sure up the midfield and Saracens comfortably saw out the rest of the match.

The team's top scorer Mark Brown was confident about teams chances in the cup. "If I can keep scoring like this we will win every game. I don't think anyone is as good at shooting as me, I'm great," boasted "Ginger" Brown (right).

So the team progress into the next round of the B&B European Cup and await the draw for the next round.

Saracens: Bennison, Sharp, Enright, Davis (c), Phipps, Holden (J Callaway), Brown, Cahill, Herman, Sharp, Whitty.
