14th February - Winkfield Saracens 2-4 Woodley Hammers (AET) - League Cup - Match Report

Goals: Enright,Cahill (pen)

Saracens suffer extra time hammer blow. After turning up for this league cup match Saracens were up against it from the start after only just about managing to get 11 players on the pitch although 4 of those players carrying injuries with some being serious injuries at that.

Sporting the new kit based on the Brazil national team today was not going to be the day for pretty football, rather a good scrap. The visitors from the premier league set about a fast pace and having a lot of time on the ball they continuously pumped long balls over the top of the Saracens defence who were being caught out each time on one occasion taking an early lead. After half hour Saracens had goalkeeper twiggy to thank for the 0-1 scoreline making class save after save as the defence was all over the place. at this point one injured player left the park for our only sub to replace him and he was injured too!

Half time and one down thanks to twiggy the second half had to be a lot better and so Saracens took the battle to the visitors starting to apply lots of pressure with crosses and high balls into the box was proving successful winning nearly all the aerial battles. A free kick floated in at the back post was headed back across goal by Brown for Enright to strike and level the game 1-1. Saracens continued to dominate the second half and was only open to counter attacks and although the defending was much improved the quick frontman was still causing the slow Saracens back line some problems with the visitors regaining the lead 1-2.

With injury time running down a late free kick put into the box a scramble eventually fell to Jon Callaway which he saw his shot blocked by the hand of a woodley player - penalty! Which composed Cahill put away to take the game to extra time. First half of extra time was all about pressure from Saracens with no luck finding the net but the second half the home side completely run out of steam and injuries carried started to affect the home sides play, each counter attack was a last ditch tackle of an effort on goal in which woodley scored twice in quick succession to round the game off 2-4.

A great effort from the lads involved which deserved more, they battled hard and still played some good football. Twyman was tirelessly running Holden carrying an injury put in the hardest tackle the manager has ever seen him do and praise to skid Mark Brown with a bad knee injury played through the pain for his team mates - shame on the rest of you.

Saracens: Twiggy, Bennison, Enright, J Callaway, Phipps, Holden, Brown, Whitty, Twyman, Taff, C Callaway (Cahill)
